HYROX vs. Traditional Gym Training: What Sets Them Apart?

by | Aug 16, 2024 | Fitness

With the rise of HYROX competitions, such as the first HYROX on African soil in Cape Town on 21 September, many fitness enthusiasts are asking, “Is HYROX better than standard gym training?”

As you would imagine, the answer isn’t straightforward because athleticism (and fitness) is a bit like a toolbox—different tools for different tasks.

Discover the unique benefits of both HYROX and traditional gym training to help you decide which approach is the perfect fit for you.

Understanding HYROX

First, let’s start with a broad definition. What exactly is this ‘HYROX’ everyone seems to be on about? Known as the ‘World Series of Fitness Racing,’ it is a competitive platform that blends running with functional workouts in a race format. This event tests endurance, strength and stamina through a sequence of eight functional fitness workouts, each followed by a 1km run. So no, it is not another term for CrossFit.  According to HYROX SA ambassador, Matthew Stone, it offers a thrilling challenge for those craving a competitive edge and a full-body workout “that feels more like an adventure than a chore.”

The cool thing in the competitive aspect is that HYROX’s structure is standardised, allowing for global comparisons and fostering a sense of inclusivity, with divisions tailored to different age groups and fitness levels. This competitive yet accessible nature has contributed to its rapid growth and international expansion.

What Is Gym Training?

On the other hand, traditional gym training focuses on improving physical fitness, strength and overall health. Gym routines can be highly customised to meet personal fitness goals, such as building muscle, losing weight, or enhancing cardiovascular health. All of this you know. The key distinction (with HYROX) is that gym workouts are often tailored to individual goals rather than competitive performance.

HYROX vs. Gym Training: A Side-by-Side Comparison

Choosing between HYROX and traditional gym training depends on personal fitness goals, preferences for competition vs. individual progress and the desired type of performance and skill development,” says Matthew. Here is what you need to consider:

  • Competition vs. Personal Goals: HYROX is competition-focused, with standardised events and a global leaderboard. Gym training, however, is more about personal fitness and achieving specific goals.
  • Variety vs. Specificity: HYROX workouts are diverse and target the entire body, designed to build endurance and functional strength. Gym training can be more targeted, focusing on particular muscle groups or fitness aspects.
  • Structure vs. Flexibility: HYROX offers a structured, challenging environment with specific exercises and sequences, while gym training offers flexibility in routines and the ability to target specific areas of fitness.

Equipment Needs

HYROX workouts require specific equipment to simulate the race, such as a SkiErg, sledge with weight plates, rowing machine (RowErg) and wall balls. Gym training equipment, however, varies widely depending on the workout plan. Whether it’s a mat for core exercises, dumbbells for strength training, or machines for cardio, the gym offers diverse options.

The Typical Training Session

HYROX training sessions emphasise metabolic conditioning, functional strength and skill development for specific exercises like sledge pushes and burpee broad jumps. “HYROX will not only improve your fitness and strength,” says Matthew, adding that, “it will cover all your muscle groups, prepping you for endurance on the day.”

Gym training, however, can range from weightlifting to HIIT, cardio and bodyweight exercises, depending on individual goals.

According to Matthew Stone, it is crucial to be efficient with your hydration strategy when it comes to a HYROX session. “Stopping for a quick drink of water or refuelling with a Red Bull for some energy and focus is always recommended,” he says, before adding, “but you don’t need to stop and have a long chat while doing it.”

The Verdict: HYROX or Gym Training?

Ultimately, the choice between HYROX and traditional gym training comes down to personal preferences and fitness goals.

  • Choose HYROX if you thrive in competitive, high-intensity environments, seek comprehensive fitness, and enjoy a structured, varied training regimen.
  • Choose Gym Training if you prefer a customisable routine, enjoy targeted muscle training, and value flexibility in your workouts.

Perhaps what we love most about HYROX (as we mentioned) is its inclusivity. Unlike many competitive sports, HYROX welcomes participants of all fitness levels. Says Matthew, “HYROX’s race structure ensures that participants of all abilities can compete simultaneously, fostering a supportive and encouraging environment.” What that means is that there are no qualification requirements, allowing anyone to participate and finish the race at their own pace.

So, if you’re looking for a new way to push your limits, HYROX could be the game-changer you’re searching for. “Embrace the HYROX challenge to build functional strength and endurance, then hit the gym to hone in on specific goals and refine your physique,” Matthew concludes. And, if you’re not quite ready to race just yet, why not check out HYROX Cape Town on 21 September 2024 to get inspired?
