WATCH: Yan Diomande’s Journey From Ivory Coast to RB Leipzig

Before Yan Diomande became a professional footballer at RB Leipzig, before the Bundesliga and European nights, he was a boy growing up in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, in a place where football was not a career path but a way of life. In his words, it was everywhere. On the streets, in the neighbourhoods, in every spare moment.

“Abidjan, you have a lot of passion for football there. We like football a lot. Everyone is playing on the street and it’s really nice.” But behind that passion was struggle. His family situation was not stable, his father had left for France and life at home was difficult. That pressure forced a life-changing decision while still very young.

“I decided to go away for football. We didn’t have a good situation at home.” Football became more than a game. It became escape, identity and purpose. Then came personal tragedy. The loss of his sister changed everything. “My dream was making her happy and proud.” That promise became the emotional foundation of everything that followed and even now, at RB Leipzig, it remains his driving force.

Growing Up in Abidjan and Learning Football the Hard Way

In his neighbourhood, football was played constantly, but not in ideal conditions. There were no perfect pitches or proper equipment. Even basic boots were not guaranteed. “We don’t play with proper shoes. But to play with this one, you have to have money.”

At one point, someone believed in him enough to buy him boots so he could continue playing. That moment stayed with him because it represented something bigger than equipment. It represented belief. “So someone bought it for me because I didn’t have money and my family as well.” That support reinforced his decision to take football seriously and leave home to pursue it properly. “I decided to go there directly. I don’t have to think. I’m going there.”

Leaving Family Behind to Chase a Football Dream

He eventually left Abidjan for a village-based football environment where he joined an academy setup. Life changed completely. He was no longer just playing on the street. He was living with other young players, training every day, and balancing school with football.

In that environment, around 40 boys lived together, all chasing the same dream. A mentor figure known as Bamba played a major role in shaping their lives, not just as players but as people. “Bamba is the one person who bought everything for us and was taking care of us in the academy.”

For Diomande, this period was about discipline. Training, recovery, school and repetition became routine. “We play football and we go to school. After training you take a shower and come to class.” He admits school was not easy for him, but he understood its importance. “I didn’t like it, but it was important.” Even in that structured system, the hunger to succeed never left him.

From Ivory Coast to the United States Alone

One of the biggest turning points in his life came when he moved to the United States for football development and education. It was his first time leaving Africa, and he did it alone.

“It was not easy to go really far away from your family.” He struggled at first with language and culture. He did not speak English when he arrived and had to learn from scratch. “No, I didn’t speak English. I started learning by myself on Duolingo with other guys.”

His teammates came from different backgrounds, including French-speaking players from Senegal, which helped him adapt gradually. Despite the difficulty, he also experienced success and independence. He won his first trophy there, something he still remembers clearly. “That was my first trophy. I still have this one at home.” The experience also built resilience. “I feel like I can live alone forever now.”

The Moment Football Became Real

After his development journey in different countries, including Spain, everything accelerated quickly. One moment, he was in a normal routine. The next, he was called into a first-team environment to face one of the biggest clubs in world football.

“I didn’t imagine they would call me for that game.” It came only two days before kickoff. No time to overthink. No time to prepare mentally for the scale of it. Then came the moment. He stepped onto the pitch against elite opposition and proved he belonged. That was the beginning of his professional breakthrough.

First Professional Goal and a Tribute to His Sister

Soon after, Diomande scored his first professional goal. It was not just a football milestone. It was deeply emotional. “A lot of emotions. Tears after my first goal.” That goal was dedicated to his sister, the person who continues to shape his motivation.

“For my sister, of course.” Even today, he reflects on what she would think of his journey. “I’m thinking of my sister a lot because today I have everything and I can share with her. My dream was making her happy and proud. Today I make her proud.”

Life at RB Leipzig and the Bundesliga Challenge

Yan Diomande is now a professional footballer at RB Leipzig in Germany, competing in one of Europe’s top leagues. The step up has brought intensity, pressure and constant competition.

He speaks openly about learning, improving and adapting to a new level of football where details matter more than ever. “The connection is not 100 percent yet. We are trying to improve and fix it.” Even after scoring goals and making an impact, he sees himself as a player still developing.

“I’m working, I’m believing in myself and I want to improve more.” He also acknowledges the ambition inside the team and within himself. “My dream is to win everything.”

Playing for His Country and Carrying Responsibility

Beyond club football, representing his country remains one of his proudest achievements. He describes it as a dream shared by many young players back home in Ivory Coast.

“It’s my biggest dream. I’m so happy and proud to play for my country.” He also understands the responsibility that comes with success at a young age, especially when it comes to family. Taking care of his family is not something he sees as optional. It is part of his identity now. “I’m so happy and proud to play this role in my family.”

A Journey Still Being Written

From Abidjan to RB Leipzig, from barefoot street football to the Bundesliga, Yan Diomande’s journey is built on sacrifice, loss, belief and relentless determination. He left home young, learned new languages, adapted to new countries and turned personal pain into motivation.

But for him, the story is far from finished. “This life is amazing. I’m so happy to be here and continue with the team.” And if his journey so far is anything to go by, the next chapters will be even bigger.
