Sifiso Gininda is not just another name in South African basketball. At 6’1″ and 100 kg, the guard forward built one of the most dominant seasons the Basketball National League has seen in recent years.
His 2024 campaign with the KZN Marlins was historic. The team went unbeaten across the regular season and playoffs, with Gininda playing a central role in that run. It was also the year he cemented himself as one of the league’s elite, earning BNL Finals MVP, a First Team selection and an All-Star nod.
“2024 was my breakout year,” he says. “I became a regular starter after years of developing my game. When the opportunity came, I made sure I didn’t let it go.”
Built for Big Moments
Gininda’s Finals performance tells you everything about his mentality. A 24-point, 15-rebound double-double under pressure is not luck. It is preparation meeting composure. “When pressure is highest, I remind myself why I play,” he says. “I approach the game with a boyish wonder and tell myself to go out and have fun.”

That mindset allows him to stay calm in chaos, a trait that separates good players from great ones. It also feeds into his leadership. One standout game against the Eagles marked a turning point. “I started strong, hit my first three shots, made defensive plays early and commanded the game on both ends. That’s when I felt I had arrived as a leader.”
Strength, Speed and Discipline
Playing across multiple positions demands versatility and Gininda has built his body and game around that reality. “It takes discipline,” he says. “Everything I do in the gym, from lifting to cardio to diet, is about what I need to deliver on the court.”
His training blends heavy strength work with explosive movements. Olympic lifts, squats and deadlifts are staples, balanced with plyometrics and resistance work to maintain speed and agility.

In-season, the focus shifts to efficiency. Two gym sessions and three on-court sessions per week keep him sharp without overloading the body. Off-season is where he builds strength and pushes his limits. One exercise stands above the rest. “Bulgarian split squats. It hits everything you need for basketball. It’s tough but it works.”
Recovery Is Part of the Plan
Gininda treats recovery with the same intent as training. His routine starts with a 1000 metre rowing session, followed by mobility work including the world’s greatest stretch and pigeon stretch.
From there, he moves into upper body and posterior chain activation, finishing with kettlebell work and stability-focused movements. The goal is simple. Stay durable, stay explosive and stay ready.
Fuel for Performance
Game-day nutrition is straightforward and effective. “I focus on carbs and protein. Pasta is my main meal about two hours before the game. Then I snack on peanut butter before tip-off.” It may sound unconventional, but for Gininda it works. Hydration remains constant throughout.

While his scoring continues to grow, defence remains the foundation of his game. “The key is footwork,” he says. “If you get to your spot before your opponent, you control the possession.” But for Gininda, defence is also personal. “If my opponent scores, I’m not doing my job. That’s how I see it.”

His ability to guard multiple positions, disrupt rhythm and read the game has made him one of the league’s most reliable defenders. Preparation plays a role too. Film study, analysing tendencies and understanding timing all feed into his defensive edge.
A Cerebral Approach to the Game
Gininda’s basketball IQ is one of his defining traits. Off the court, he studies the game obsessively. “I watch film, analyse opponents and look at team structures. It helps me plan and stay ahead.” That awareness carries into his leadership style.
“Leadership is about getting everyone aligned. Making sure everyone is doing their job so we can achieve our goal.”
In tough moments, he leans on communication. “I remind my teammates that we’re in this together. Simplify the game and take it one possession at a time.” Behind the stats and accolades is a deeper motivation. Family. “They made sacrifices so I could have these opportunities. That drives me every day.” It is also the message he wants to pass on to young South African players. “Trust the process. Stay consistent. When things get hard, don’t complain. There’s a payoff if you stick with it.” Representation is equally important. “I want to be part of the conversation about the best players to come out of South Africa. I want to help put the sport on the map.”
Ready for the Next Level
With his sights set on the Basketball Africa League, Gininda knows the jump will demand more. “Conditioning is everything. At the next level, you need to be in peak shape to think and move at a higher level.” With his skill set, physical tools and mentality, he looks ready. Away from the court, Gininda prioritises balance. A perfect off-day includes yoga, journaling and quality time with family.

His biggest inspirations come from home and music, particularly J. Cole. “He really resonates with how I see life and where I want to go.” He is also candid about the realities of being an athlete. “People think we don’t feel pressure or nerves. But we do. We feel everything.” Staying grounded comes back to purpose. “Basketball gave me a space to be seen and heard. I never want to lose that.”
The Complete Package
Gininda is not easy to define. He is a versatile scorer, an elite defender, a strong rebounder and a vocal leader. More importantly, he is a player who understands the game and his role within it. Whether it is locking down an opponent, stepping up in clutch moments or lifting his team, he brings impact on every possession. And if 2024 was the breakthrough, the next chapter looks even bigger.
