10 TikTok Food Trends That Are Actually Good for You

by | Nov 17, 2023 | Nutrition

If it feels like there’s a new TikTok food trend taking over every other week, that’s probably because there is. One of the best ways to go viral is to come up with a unique and enticing recipe. Some requirements: it must be easy and fast to prepare, it must have some sort of aesthetically pleasing or super standout feature to it, and it must be either very convenient or very fun—or a mix of both. And one thing that should be a requirement, but isn’t always the case: make sure it tastes good!

A few of TikTok’s most popular food trends end up being a little disappointing, even if they pop up on camera. Take baked oats, for example. They’re appealingly simple and they look like cake for breakfast, but in reality, they tend to be a little mushy, bland, and boring. Taste is subjective, so everyone’s opinion will differ, but we put together 10 TikTok food trends that we believe bring the flavour we’re looking for.

1. Pepper and Cucumber Salad

@ww_official Thank you @rachael_kirkconnell this is 🔥#viralrecipe #cucumbersalad #gingerdressing #ww #wwrecipes #easyrecipe #thebachelor #rachaelkirkconnell #fyp ♬ Love songX – Song X

The Bachelor star and internet personality Rachael Kirkconnell introduced TikTok to this pepper and cucumber salad in March of 2023, and it has been a hit since then. It’s made up of mini peppers, mini cucumbers, Trader Joe’s chilli crunch, everything but the bagel seasoning, and a ginger salad dressing (she specifically uses the brand Makoto). This couldn’t be easier to make and it’s genuinely delicious. It’s crunchy, savoury, a little bit sweet, and full of flavour. You can easily substitute with what you have if necessary, and it works as a side, a lunch, or even a main entree with some added protein.

2. Frozen Strawberry Clusters

If you’re looking for a sweet treat, these frozen strawberry clusters are a must. They require a little bit of prep time before they can be eaten, but every step is easy as pie. Chop up strawberries into small pieces, then mix them with plain Greek yoghurt and some honey as a sweetener. Scoop the mixture out into small clumps on parchment paper, then put them in the freezer to harden for about an hour. Once they’re frozen, melt some chocolate with coconut oil to thin it out, and dip the clusters in the chocolate to coat. Pop them back in the freezer to let them harden again, and in 30 minutes, they’re ready to eat.

3. Corn Ribs

@bosh.tv CORN RIBS! 🌽 #vegan #cornribs #corn #ribs #recipe #foodtok #trending #viral ♬ Very Good Very Nice – Bck

Corn ribs are a fun and unique spin on fresh corn, even long after corn on the cob season has passed. They make a delicious side dish while acting as a solid vegetarian twist to ribs as the star of the meal. You start by cutting corn off the cob in large strips, trying to keep them intact. Douse them in a herby, flavorful butter with some cheese, then stick them in the air fryer to bake.

4. Shaved Frozen Fruit

Shaved frozen fruit took over TikTok during the summer, and it’s easy to see why. Light and refreshing, this snack makes for a healthy alternative to ice cream or other iced sweets. You simply freeze fruit, then use a box grater to shave it. For the popular shaved watermelon, you can mix it with a little honey, fresh mint, and lime juice for some unbelievable flavour. This is super customizable based on your favourite fruits, too—frozen peaches are great over vanilla yoghurt with honey, fresh orange juice, and lemon zest.

5. The Chopped Italian Sandwich

Fans of the traditional Italian sandwich will love Tiktok’s chopped Italian. You take all the tasty ingredients of a traditional Italian sandwich (deli meats, cheese, lettuce, banana peppers, tomatoes, etc.), but instead of layering them in a hero, you chop them all up similar to a salad. Add some oil and vinegar, mix everything up, then put it in your bread of choice. The result is a slightly messy sandwich that gives you a taste of every ingredient in each bite.

6. Emily Mariko’s Salmon Rice Bowl

@zoetheolive everybody moved on, I stayed there🍚 #emilymariko #salmon #rice #studentmeals #unistudent #seaweed ♬ About Damn Time – Lizzo

For a long time, it was impossible to go on TikTok and not scroll by someone re-creating Emily Mariko’s famous salmon rice bowl. To make it, she starts by mashing up cooked salmon until it almost looks like tuna, then mixes it with white rice, and drizzles some soy sauce and Sriracha over it. Mariko scoops it out with seaweed chips for extra crunch, but you can eat it however you want.

7. Baked Feta Pasta

@feelgoodfoodie It’s been almost 2 years since baked feta pasta went viral and this recipe is now a part of our regular dinner rotation. In this version, I’m adding shrimp during the last 5 minutes of cook time to bulk it up with more protein #sogood ♬ original sound – Feel Good Foodie

The baked feta pasta was another TikTok food trend that was almost impossible to ignore. This one uses one pan, and minimal ingredients, and produces the perfect comfort dinner. You just place tomatoes, olive oil, and feta cheese in a dish, put it in the oven, and bake until everything is roasted into the creamy feta. Mix it up, add some cooked pasta and your protein of choice, and you’re done.

The tortilla egg wrap is more like a hack than a full recipe, but it’s still super quick and customizable. You scramble eggs with cheese, and just as it starts to set in the pan, you put a tortilla over it. After the tortilla cooks for a minute or so, give it a flip. Place toppings on the eggs, then fold everything in half. The crispy tortilla and eggs deliver the perfect bite.

9. Frozen Yoghurt Bark

@papijoe242 Frozen Yogurt Bark 🍓🫐 — Ingredients: • Greek yogurt • honey • granola • strawberries & blueberries (can be substituted based on your preference) — Instructions: • Wash and slice your fruit(s) into smaller pieces. • In a bowl, mix 2 cups of Greek yogurt and about 2 tablespoons of honey. • Using parchment paper, line your baking sheet and pour your Greek yogurt mixture on to the surface. • Next, add your fruit(s), granola and honey. • Place baking sheet in the freezer for 3-4 hours. Another quick and easy healthy snack idea that is the popular frozen yoghurt bark. You spread yoghurt to a thin layer on parchment paper, then add your toppings of choice; it’s usually cut up fruit and granola, but you can do whatever you want. Freeze the whole thing, then break it into pieces after an hour or so and enjoy. Pro tip: a drizzle of honey will satisfy your sweet tooth a little bit more.

10. Smash Burger Tacos

@naughtyfork Yes, theyre amazing #fyp #smashtacos #foryou #tacos #bigmac #burgers ♬ Cupid – Twin Ver. (FIFTY FIFTY) – Sped Up Version – sped up 8282

They’re certainly not the most authentic tacos out there, but smash burger tacos are still a viral sensation. You just place ground beef on a tortilla, then put the whole thing face down into a pan or grill to cook. Once it’s fully cooked, add some cheese and your toppings of choice (along with a delicious sauce), and fold it like a taco. It’s fun, kid-friendly, and will definitely become a new go-to.
