Tendai Mtawarira, affectionately known as “The Beast,” stands as one of the most iconic figures in South African rugby history. With an impressive career spanning over a decade, Tendai has left an indelible mark both on and off the field.
Tendai’s rugby journey began when he earned his first Springbok cap in 2008. Known for his formidable presence as a prop, he played 117 Tests for the Springboks, ranking just behind Bryan Habana and Victor Matfield in national appearances. Tendai also holds the record as the most capped Super Rugby player in South Africa, featuring in 159 games for the Sharks. His breakout moment came in 2009, as a 23-year-old, when he delivered a stunning performance in the series against the British & Irish Lions. A decade later, he played a pivotal role in the Springboks’ triumphant 2019 World Cup final against England, marking a fitting end to his illustrious career.
Early Life and Ambitions
Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Tendai’s journey to the top was filled with challenges. At the age of 15, he earned a scholarship to Peterhouse Boys School, which set the foundation for his rugby career. At 18, he moved to South Africa, driven by the dream of transforming his life. “Coming to South Africa at 18 without family support was tough. But I embraced challenges as opportunities to prove myself,” he recalls. One significant obstacle was obtaining his South African passport, a process expedited by the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu. “His support was crucial, turning what could have taken years into weeks,” Tendai remembers.
Balancing Fitness, Nutrition and Mental Health
Maintaining mental health amidst a demanding career was crucial for Tendai. He emphasises the importance of balancing rigorous training with relaxation and family time. “Every opportunity I had to get away from the game, whether on off weeks or holidays, I took it. It was vital to refresh mentally, which allowed me to return to the game with renewed energy and focus,” he reflects. Tendai acknowledges the critical role nutrition played in his athletic performance. “In my early years, I didn’t focus much on my diet. But in my mid-twenties, I realised the impact of poor eating habits on my performance. With the help of a Biokineticist, I adopted a tailored diet, which significantly improved my fitness and agility,” he shares.
Like many athletes, Tendai had his go-to cheat meal. “After a match, I’d indulge in a burger and chips with some ice cream. It was a perfect recovery treat before getting back to my fitness goals,” he says. His fitness regimen was rigorous and evolved over the years to meet the demands of professional rugby. A typical day involved early morning weigh-ins, gym sessions focusing on explosive power, video analysis of the opposition, set-piece work and team meetings. “Being a pro athlete was demanding, but attention to detail and consistent training were key to my success,” he notes.

Transitioning Beyond Rugby and The Beast Foundation
Transitioning from rugby to other pursuits was challenging but rewarding. Tendai found that maintaining a training regime was essential for his mental health. “Training, whether boxing or running, helps me manage stress and stay focused. It’s been crucial in navigating my new career paths,” he explains.
In 2020, Tendai launched The Beast Foundation to empower young people through sports training, skills development and education. He believes that sports play a vital role in holistic youth development, particularly in disadvantaged communities. “Sports teach values like teamwork, communication, integrity and respect. These are essential life skills that can be applied beyond the field,” he emphasises.

As a motivational speaker, Tendai strives to inspire others by sharing his journey. “I always tell my story because I believe it’s powerful. I want to show that regardless of your background, you can achieve greatness with hard work, focus and determination,” he says. He also highlights the importance of overcoming adversity, teamwork, and striving for excellence.
Rugby’s Role in Fostering Unity and Finding Balance
Tendai believes that rugby can play a pivotal role in fostering unity in diverse societies like South Africa. “Rugby brings together people from all walks of life, teaching them to work as a cohesive unit despite their differences. It’s a powerful example of how we can achieve great things when we look past our differences and work together,” he asserts.
Balancing his roles as a businessman, speaker and philanthropist while maintaining a family life is challenging, but Tendai prioritises his commitments effectively. “My family is my top priority. Everything I do is for them. I’m ambitious and determined to achieve greatness in my next chapter, whether in business, philanthropy, or motivational speaking,” he shares. With a supportive team and influential mentors, Tendai is poised to make a significant impact beyond the rugby field. “I’m blessed to have amazing people guiding me. I’m focused on achieving new heights and making a difference in the lives of young people globally,” he concludes.
Tendai Mtawarira’s post-career life has been supported by Roc Nation Sports International, enabling him to transition smoothly and pursue his passions beyond rugby. With their backing, Tendai continues to inspire and lead, demonstrating that his legacy extends far beyond the rugby pitch.
