For most shoppers, grabbing a coffee is simply part of the retail experience. But at Sandton City, every cup served at the Fabiani Café is helping create opportunities for young South Africans. In addition, it is supporting communities affected by food insecurity.
Open until 13 July, the Fabiani Café is a corporate social investment (CSI) initiative developed in partnership with the Sozo Foundation and FoodForward SA. Beyond serving premium coffee, the activation gives graduates from the Sozo Foundation’s Barista Training Programme valuable workplace experience. Additionally, it contributes to FoodForward SA’s mission of providing nutritious meals to vulnerable communities across the country.
“The Fabiani Café represents our belief that great brands have the power to create meaningful impact beyond retail,” says Ngqondi Mfini, Head of Marketing Department at Fabiani. “By partnering with organisations such as the Sozo Foundation and FoodForward SA, we’re investing in young people, creating pathways to employment, and contributing to stronger, more resilient communities.”
According to Sinesethu Sitokwe, Marketing Project Administrator at Fabiani and G-Star, the idea was to create an experience that delivers value well beyond retail. “The Fabiani Café was born from a simple belief: great experiences can create meaningful impact. We wanted to build something that extended beyond retail, a space where craftsmanship, conversation and community come together,” says Sitokwe.
Creating Opportunities Through Experience
At the heart of the initiative are graduates from the Sozo Foundation’s Barista Training Programme. This programme equips young people with industry recognised skills before placing them in a live customer environment at the café.

For Fabiani, practical experience is just as important as classroom learning.”South Africa has an incredible pool of talented young people who simply need access to opportunity,” says Sitokwe. “Skills development becomes even more meaningful when it’s paired with hands-on experience, confidence building and exposure to professional standards.”

Working in the café allows graduates to develop technical barista skills while also building confidence, professionalism and customer service expertise. “These are transferable skills that can open doors throughout the hospitality and retail industries. Ultimately, they contribute to long-term career opportunities,” Sitokwe adds.
More Than a Fashion Brand
While Fabiani is best known for its premium menswear, the brand says initiatives like this reflect a broader commitment to making a positive contribution beyond fashion.
“We’ve always believed that true craftsmanship is about more than what you wear. It’s about the legacy you leave behind,” says Sitokwe. “The Fabiani Café reflects our belief that style and purpose can coexist, and that a brand can make a positive contribution beyond the products it creates.”

That thinking also informed the partnership with FoodForward SA. Every purchase made at the café contributes towards initiatives that help provide meals to vulnerable communities. “Creating opportunity and addressing immediate community needs go hand in hand,” says Sitokwe. “It means every customer becomes part of something bigger simply by enjoying a coffee.”
Why Community Partnerships Matter
For Fabiani, working alongside organisations already making a difference creates the potential for longer lasting impact. “Businesses have a significant role to play in the communities they operate in,” says Sitokwe. “When partnerships are authentic and built around shared values, they create sustainable impact rather than one-off initiatives.”

Visitors to the café are encouraged to see their purchase as more than just a coffee stop. “Every coffee tells a bigger story, one of opportunity, skills development and community impact,” Sitokwe explains. “If customers leave inspired by the idea that small actions can make a difference, then we’ve achieved what we set out to do.”
A Commitment Beyond This Activation
Although the Fabiani Café is a limited activation, the brand says its commitment to purpose driven initiatives will continue.

“Purpose has always been part of how we think about our role as a brand, and the Fabiani Café is an exciting expression of that commitment,” says Sitokwe. “We’re continually exploring opportunities to create initiatives that align with our values and deliver meaningful impact. Our focus remains the same: creating experiences that bring together craftsmanship, community and positive social change.”
The Fabiani Café is open to the public at Sandton City until 13 July. It offers customers the opportunity to enjoy a premium coffee while supporting an initiative that invests in South Africa’s future, one cup at a time.
