The Words That Heal campaign invites South Africans to send voice notes that could become part of a powerful song promoting mental wellness.
Mental health challenges are affecting more young people than ever before in South Africa. In fact, over 60 percent of the country’s youth report struggling with issues related to their mental wellbeing. A new campaign from Sandton City and the Riky Rick Foundation is turning words into action by encouraging the public to share messages of hope and healing.
What Is the Words That Heal Campaign?
Words That Heal is a new mental health initiative that invites South Africans to send uplifting voice notes that will be woven into a crowdsourced song of hope. The track will be released on streaming platforms later this year, with all proceeds going to the Riky Rick Foundation to help fund free therapy for young people.
The Foundation was launched to honour the life and legacy of the late rapper and continues his mission of using creativity for good. Through “artivism,” the Foundation promotes mental wellness, artistic expression and emotional support for youth across the country.
How to Get Involved
If you have a message that could help someone feel seen or supported, record a short voice note and send it via WhatsApp to 063 980 5816 before 17 August 2025. Your words might be selected to feature in the final track. This is your chance to be part of something meaningful and potentially life-changing.
Phase Two Will Launch During Mental Health Month
In September and October, the campaign will expand into an in-person activation at Sandton City. Shoppers will be invited to listen to the completed song and to Riky Rick’s final album as part of a tribute to his life and message. A pop-up retail space will also open in the centre, where visitors can purchase exclusive merchandise and even personalise items on site in collaboration with visual artist Samurai Farai. All proceeds from merchandise sales, along with pledges from corporate sponsors, will go to the Riky Rick Foundation to support mental health projects and creative youth programmes.
Why This Campaign Matters
This initiative is about more than music. It is about connection, storytelling and creating safe spaces for healing. Riky Rick once said, “Please believe in young people. Give them as many opportunities as they need to prove themselves.” This campaign reflects that belief and offers all of us a chance to be part of the solution.
