Orlando Pirates are the only South African Premiership team to win three major championships in a single season. It’s this unparalleled glory that has cemented the squad as one of the best in history. In many ways, the Orlando Pirates-themed suite at the Protea Hotel Cape Town Breakwater Lodge represents that championship pedigree. It’s spacious, decorated with inspiring memorabilia and stacked with all the amenities you could need.

Situated on the outskirts of the V&A Waterfront, the hotel is just a stone’s throw from the city’s most-beloved hotspots. With Green Point, Sea Point, the city centre and the aforementioned mall encircling the locale, you’ll be within walking distance of wherever you need to go. We booked a two-night stay at the hotel to give you the DL on this smart stay.
Room to Grow

Walking into the suite, awash with natural light streaming through the tall windows that look over the parking lot and towards the oceanside of Sea Point, it feels like a breath of fresh air. The room is divided into four distinct sections. An entrance where hangers and handy shelving welcome your valuables; a roomy lounge area replete with two comfy armchairs, TV and get-stuff-done desk; sleeping area with a sprawling and sleep-easy bed; and a bathroom that features both a modern shower and tub.
The vibe: you can be comfortable (and productive) here. Throughout the room you’ll find icons of the Orlando Pirates’ road to victory. Items such as jersey signed by this championship-winning team to a colourful mural dividing the bathroom from the living quarters. These elements are tastefully incorporated, elegantly merging sporting greatness and modern comforts. It’s inspiring stuff.

For this trip I played the role of digital nomad, setting up my laptop on the desk and making regular visits to the always-stocked coffee station downstairs where a swift and efficient machine dispenses everything from Americanos to Cappuccinos. During lunch breaks, I could head out on a short walk and find myself in the middle of the V&A Waterfront. It’s a level of convenience that matches the plush nature of the suite.
Champion-Tier Dining

Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel are served up at the Stonebreakers Restaurant. (You’ll find by walking through the hallowed halls of UCT GSB’s Breakwater Campus). The first meal of the day is served buffet-style with a myriad of meal options. (Think: omelettes, waffles, cereal, parfait, you name it.) I had a chance to sample almost everything on the “menu”. It was a delicious change of pace from my homebound overnight oats.

But the restaurant’s stand-out dishes are definitely served at dinner. The restaurant caters to all dietary requirements (there’s even a separate vegan menu with a variety of plant-based palate-pleasers). While you can’t go wrong with any option on the menu – every dish was a winner for my partner and I – I would definitely recommend the oxtail, steak burger, vegan mezze platter and bruschetta.
Finishing Touch
Retiring to your room after a busy day feels like a therapeutic unravelling. Everything is taken care of so your job is just to relax, rest and restore. Whether you’re travelling for work or just looking for a seriously comfortable stay (in the company of champions); I can highly recommend locking in a few nights at the Breakwater Lodge right now.
