Be A Style Icon: This Is How To Wear Denim On Denim

by | May 12, 2014 | Style & Grooming

Denim is the fabric of democracy. Loved by style icons and construction workers, farmhands and bankers, gentlemen and rogues: it is rare in fashion to encounter such a great leveller. Denim is all things to all people. A master of reinvention, sometimes polished, sometimes rugged, always hard-working, this is a fabric for all seasons.

Remember when it became cool to wear a blazer with jeans? Game changer. The next denim revolution was accessories. Today this democratic fabric is found in everything from hats to bags and shoes. Even dressed-up accessories are in on the action – like ties rendered in indigo.

But the most daring denim trend that’s surprisingly making a comeback after Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s sent it straight to the hall of fame of fashion fails is denim on denim (check out this couple who even honoured the fashion tragedy for Halloween).

Britney and Justin have left us with an important lesson and made the mistake so that you don’t have to; denim on denim needs to be cleverly thought out or it will look like a hot mess. But it’s so simple, here is the one key rule you need to remember when trying out this fashion-forward trend:

To avoid looking like an outcast from a rodeo, aim for different washes and weights.

Two contemporary ideas: a light chambray shirt with dark wash jeans, or a black denim jacket with coloured jeans. Contrast is key.
