South Africa has a new fitness challenge, and its first champions have officially been crowned. Lohan Swart and Iana Strydom claimed the men’s and women’s titles at the inaugural Red Bull Agri-Grit in Bloemfontein. They took on a demanding course inspired by the physical work that has shaped generations of Free State farmers.

Held at Middelwater Plaas outside Bloemfontein, the competition took everyday farm work and turned it into a test of strength, speed, stamina and, crucially, efficiency.

Farm Strength Meets Functional Fitness

Red Bull Agri-Grit was designed by Red Bull athlete and obstacle course racing champion Thomas van Tonder. Competitors faced a series of farm-inspired stations. But this wasn’t simply about who could muscle their way through the course fastest. Each station rewarded efficiency, strategy and resilience. Therefore, competitors needed to work smart while under serious physical pressure.

That combination makes Agri-Grit a particularly South African take on functional fitness. Instead of exercises designed purely for competition, the event draws inspiration from the kind of physical labour that has been part of farming communities for generations. Competitors progressed through qualifying heats, knockout rounds and eventually the finals. Swart produced a dominant performance to take the men’s crown. Meanwhile, Strydom’s consistency and composure helped her secure the women’s title.

Iana Strydom Takes the Women’s Title

For Strydom, the win was about more than finishing at the top of the leaderboard. “Taking part in Red Bull Agri-Grit was an absolute pleasure. I love a good challenge, and Red Bull definitely delivered,” she said. Naturally competitive, Strydom said claiming the inaugural title was something she was particularly proud of.

“This victory means so much to me. I’m naturally competitive, so bringing home the title is something I’m really proud of.” Her takeaway from the competition was simple: commit fully to the challenge in front of you and keep moving forward, even when things get difficult.

Lohan Swart’s Training Pays Off

On the men’s side, Swart saw his victory as the payoff for months of hard work. “Winning Red Bull Agri-Grit means a lot to me. It was an incredibly demanding event that pushed me both physically and mentally,” he said.

For Swart, the result reflected the discipline and consistency he had put into his preparation, from early mornings and tough training sessions to learning to keep working through fatigue. He also credited the level of competition and atmosphere on the day with motivating him to continue testing his limits.

Why Agri-Grit Is About More Than Brute Strength

That combination of physical and mental toughness was exactly what course designer Van Tonder wanted Agri-Grit to represent. Growing up on a farm shaped his understanding of strength. For him, strength extends beyond simply being able to lift or move something heavy.

“Agri-Grit was created to celebrate a kind of strength that doesn’t always get recognised,” Van Tonder said. “Growing up on a farm taught me that grit isn’t just about being physically strong; it’s about staying focused, adapting under pressure and getting the job done no matter what.” According to Van Tonder, Swart and Strydom embodied exactly those qualities on their way to becoming the competition’s first champions.

A New Kind of South African Fitness Competition

The inaugural event attracted competitors, families and spectators for a full day of head-to-head competition, alongside live DJs, entertainment and music performances. More importantly for South Africa’s growing functional fitness scene, Agri-Grit introduces a competition with a distinctly local identity.

Born in the Free State, the format turns everyday agricultural work into timed fitness stations, with competitors earning points at each stop. Speed matters, but so does how efficiently each task is completed. The result is a fitness challenge that celebrates South Africa’s farming heritage. It also tests the qualities that translate to almost any demanding sport: strength, stamina, composure, adaptability and the willingness to keep working when fatigue sets in.

For Swart and Strydom, that combination was enough to make history as Red Bull Agri-Grit’s first champions.
