If you’re an avid sports fan, you’ve no doubt heard the name Anrich Nortje crop up—usually in the same breath as “speed, bowler and bouncers”. As a professional cricketer who regularly sends the speed gun flying over 150kph, one has to wonder what it takes to be recognised as one of the fastest bowlers in the world.
In his own words, his style is “aggressive but calm under pressure”, AKA the perfect pairing for the Proteas Cricketer who recently claimed his 50th career test wicket for SA during the test series against England. On the field he’s the epitome of sheer determination and focus; but off field, well, he’s laid-back, cool, calm, and collected.
Simply put, there’s much more than meets the eye when you meet the dynamic player who comes from Uitenhag, north of Port Elizabeth. Here are his tips for living a healthier (and happier) lifestyle:
1. Get Enough Sleep
WHY? You need to get enough sleep in order to feel well rested, energised and focused. If you don’t get enough sleep it will not only negatively impact your fitness journey but also your mental abilities.

2. Make Exercise Part of Your Lifestyle
WHY? As soon as you start integrating some exercise into your everyday life, making it something you have to do almost every day, like eating and sleeping, you will very quickly start realising the benefits.
3. Always Have a Goal in Mind
WHY? Have short term goals as well as long term goals. If you reach a goal, set a new goal, this will make you to always want to be or do better and achieve more, just make sure you also celebrate and appreciate the goals you have already reached.
4. Strike a Balance
WHY? While it is great to have fitness as a top priority in your life, also make sure you keep things balanced. Make sure you leave space for downtime as well, you don’t want something to consume your mind, because your mind also has to rest, when your mind rests, your body also rests and recharges.
5. Find the Right Fuel
WHY? You have to fuel your body with the correct foods in order for it to work and drive you where you need it to go. Food can be so beneficial to you, but also very damaging if you don’t know how or what to eat.
