Introducing the Descent™ G1 Solar–Ocean Edition

by | May 13, 2024 | Gear-Tech

A robust dive computer designed for both underwater explorations and topside adventures, the Descent™ G1 Solar–Ocean Edition incorporates recycled ocean-bound plastics in its housing, bezel, and buttons, aligning with our dedication to sustainability. Crafted with a commitment to environmental stewardship, this watch features a solar charging lens that extends dive time, providing up to 25 hours of battery life in dive mode and an impressive 124 days in smartwatch mode when solar charged.

Environmental Innovation: Repurposing Ocean-Bound Plastics

Driven by a desire to make a positive impact, the concept for the Descent™ G1 Solar–Ocean Edition emerged from collaborative brainstorming sessions among Garmin associates. Our team, deeply connected to ocean activities like fishing, diving, and conservation efforts, saw an opportunity to repurpose plastics destined for our oceans. Through extensive research and innovation, we envisioned a watch that respects our planet and enhances the diving experience.

Sustainable Manufacturing Process

Beginning with collecting and processing ocean-bound plastics, the material undergoes a meticulous transformation into a durable resin, reinforced with glass fibre, and ultimately moulded into the watch’s components. The resulting rugged dive computer embodies eco-conscious design, empowering users to explore confidently beneath the waves.

Combining Dive Functionality with Smart Features

The Descent™ G1 Solar–Ocean Edition eliminates the need for separate devices, offering various dive modes catering to different gas mixes, including nitrox and trimix, alongside gauge, apnea, and closed-circuit rebreather modes. Surface GPS tracking records dive entry and exit points, while data storage for up to 200 dives is shareable via the Garmin Dive™ app. Customisable data screens enhance dive monitoring, and a built-in 3-axis dive compass aids underwater navigation. Tide condition updates are displayed on the watch, and over 30 built-in sports apps, including recovery tracking and fitness assessments, cater to active lifestyles. Comprehensive health monitoring features, from sleep tracking to heart rate monitoring and hydration tracking, ensure users stay in peak condition.
