Kiss dry lips goodbye in three easy steps.
1. Moisturise
Lips are one of the most exposed areas of your skin, yet they have an extremely thin outer layer and few oil-producing sebaceous glands. Cold temperatures, wind and air conditioning can cause dryness and cracking. Rehydrate your lips daily with a balm or cream rich in vitamins A and E, shea or cocoa butter, beeswax and natural oils.

2. Exfoliate
If your lips are prone to cracking and dryness, check out maintenance creams with skin exfoliating properties like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), a family of acids derived from fruit, sugar and milk. These acids work by shedding dead tissue from the skin’s surface, revealing newer, less-damaged skin cells beneath. This process does, however, leave your skin more prone to sunburn, so make extra sure you apply an SPF balm regularly. An alternative method is the use of microgranule exfoliators. Your lips are sensitive, so be gentle when applying. Make sure you moisturise your lips well after exfoliating.

3. Protect
Even during winter months it’s essential to protect your lips from the harsh effects of UV rays. A cloudy sky does not mean you’re protected. Look for a lip balm with an SPF of no less than 15. Re-apply regularly, especially after eating or drinking. Remember to apply any SPF balm or lotion at least 30 minutes before going into the sun. This allows your skin to absorb it properly.
