If you haven’t heard about the new drug for women with a low sexual desire by now, let me introduce the drug, flibanserin called Addyi dubbed the ‘female viagra’.
Addyi was approved on the 18th August 2015 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Although it was rejected twice by the same body as they found that the benefits did not outweigh the risks, however they received flak from advocacy groups who believed that women were unfairly denied access to this type of therapy.

Released in late October last year by a privately owned company namely, Sprout Pharmaceuticals, this product will be issued with strong warnings as there are many health risks such as high blood pressure and fainting.
It should not be mixed with alcohol and it must be taken daily (which sounds a bit excessive). As far as sexual satisfaction goes, this drug might not pull it off, with some experts saying it will not provide any meaningful improvement to a women’s sex life.
“The dangers will likely deter many women since Addyi in clinical trials was associated with an increase of only one sexually satisfying sexual event per month, said Raghuram Selvaraju, managing director of brokerage H.C. Wainwright & Co.”
This drug kind-of has one thinking that if this drug does not improve anything then why would women want to buy it and endure all the side effects that come with it.
Some pharmaceutical firms state that ‘Addyi’ should be seen as more of a pacemaker and not a product that will rake in millions.
With critiques saying that, “There will be some pent-up demand for Addyi for perhaps six months, but then patients and doctors will abandon the drug as side effects pile up.”
This product might not be highly effective and impressive but some believe it will open up the debate on whether women have equal treatment options when it comes to low sexual desire.
Wondering when it could hit our shores and the price? According to Medical Daily “Sprout executives said they plan to expand the market for Addyi by seeking approval outside the United States, but declined to speculate when.”
