Garmin has expanded its flagship multisport GPS smartwatch range with the fēnix 9 and fēnix 9 Pro. Both models introduce enhanced stamina tracking, updated navigation tools and Garmin Epic. Garmin Epic is a feature that brings a series of activities together as one shareable story. The Pro range adds a titanium case, display and solar options. It also includes an integrated flashlight and inReach connectivity on select models, with important regional limits for South African users.
Training Insights That Adapt to Your Effort
The fēnix 9 range is designed to help athletes understand how their endurance changes over time. New stamina zones and a stamina curve draw on fitness gains and training history. This gives users more information to manage effort during an activity and pace themselves across a session or event.
There are more than 100 activity profiles, with additional data for indoor rowing. This includes VO₂ Max and a power curve when used with a compatible power meter-equipped rowing machine. Expanded rucking features let users adjust pack weight during an activity and follow GORUCK workouts on the watch. Users can also set target metrics such as calories burned with pack weights up to 100 kg.
Turn a Training Block Into a Story
Garmin Epic is a free Garmin Connect feature that groups activities recorded over days, weeks or months into one cohesive timeline. Users can add photos and review health and performance data from the period. Then, they can share the story with friends and family. It can bring context to a training block, a cycling stage race or a multi-day backpacking trip.
More Responsive Maps for the Next Route
Both watches include built-in routable maps. Garmin says the updated map engine has 50 per cent more RAM than the fēnix 8. Panning is up to 30 per cent faster. A new perspective view adds detail at different distances to help users anticipate the terrain ahead. In addition, navigation tools include dynamic round-trip routing, NextFork map guidance and grade-adjusted running pace.
The 64 GB of memory allows users to download twice as many maps as on the fēnix 8. Users can also store up to 7,000 songs. The watches are built for a mix of training and time outdoors. They include tools intended to support route planning as well as on-the-go navigation.
A Brighter Display and a Lighter Pro Design
The fēnix 9 has an AMOLED display that Garmin says is twice as bright as its predecessor. It also has a scratch-resistant sapphire lens, leakproof buttons and a dive rating of up to 40 metres. The fēnix 9 Pro builds on that foundation with AMOLED displays offering up to 3,000 nits of brightness.
For the first time on a fēnix smartwatch, the Pro uses a titanium watch case. Garmin says its nano-moulding process combines metal and polymer at the molecular level. This brings together strength and function while reducing the case thickness to keep the watch lightweight. On the 51 mm fēnix 9 Pro AMOLED, the 1.5-inch display is 15 per cent larger than the display on the fēnix 8. This is achieved without increasing the case size.
Select Pro models have solar-charging displays. The integrated LED flashlight adds a green light mode designed to help preserve night vision. Garmin lists solar versions in 47 mm and 51 mm sizes.
Phone-Free Connectivity Comes With a Regional Caveat
Select fēnix 9 Pro models include inReach connectivity, which can support calls, texts, LiveTrack notifications, Garmin Locate and weather forecasts through LTE or satellite. These watches also support SOS communication to Garmin Response, Garmin’s 24/7-staffed coordination centre. An active plan is required, and service depends on coverage and local rules.

Garmin’s supplied release states that LTE network coverage and satellite connectivity are not available in Africa. South African users should therefore check current service availability and requirements before relying on these connected features, especially for safety or emergency communication. Garmin also notes that the watch’s satellite and SOS functions have limitations compared with dedicated inReach devices.
Sizes, Battery Life and Bands
The fēnix 9 comes in 43 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm sizes. The fēnix 9 Pro is also offered in all three sizes, with connectivity options across the range where service is supported. Garmin lists up to 29 days of battery life in smartwatch mode for the largest fēnix 9. For the largest AMOLED fēnix 9 Pro, battery life is up to 31 days. For select solar models, it is up to 57 days. The solar estimate assumes all-day wear and three hours outdoors per day in 50,000-lux conditions.
New ComfortFit accessory bands are available for both models. Their split-weave fabric is designed to combine stretch, durability, softness and moisture resistance. QuickFit makes it easy to adjust or change the band.
