How NIVEA Brought Recovery and Self-Care to HYROX Johannesburg

by | Grooming, Partnership

HYROX is designed to test every aspect of fitness. Combining functional workout stations with running intervals, the race challenges strength, endurance and mental resilience in equal measure. But while much of the focus is on performance, recovery and self-care are becoming just as important to the HYROX experience.

That was the thinking behind NIVEA’s presence at HYROX Johannesburg, where the brand invited athletes and spectators to experience its Derma Control range while taking a moment to refresh between races, workouts and supporter duties.

Bringing Performance and Care Together

At the heart of the activation was a dedicated NIVEA Recovery Station where athletes and supporters could freshen up, enjoy grooming touch-ups, snap photos, tackle a wall ball challenge and stand a chance to win prizes.

According to NIVEA South Africa Brand Manager Yolanda Katsha, the activation was created to highlight the connection between performance and personal care. “Today we are here to bridge the gap between performance and care, and we’re doing that through our new Derma Control range that protects you from sweat and odour, but also looks after your underarms,” she told Men’s Health.

The Derma Control range is designed for active lifestyles, offering long-lasting sweat and odour protection while helping to care for skin under demanding conditions. In an event like HYROX, where competitors spend hours running, lifting, pushing and pulling, that combination of performance and care becomes especially relevant.

Visitors to the stand could also take advantage of complimentary haircuts, enjoy a quick refresh between events and capture the moment at dedicated selfie stations, making it one of the busiest areas at the event throughout the weekend.

Unathi Mkhize on Hitting His Goal

NIVEA x HYROX ambassador Unathi Mkhize had plenty to celebrate after completing his race and hitting the target he had set for himself. “It was absolutely amazing,” Mkhize told Men’s Health after crossing the finish line. “We got the target time that we wanted. We did 1 hour and 15 minutes, which was a good target.” Despite achieving his goal, he admitted that the race was far from easy.

“It’s very tough. It’s very tough to breathe here,” he said of the indoor conditions. Following the race, Mkhize headed straight to the NIVEA Recovery Station. “Firstly, I have a fresh cut courtesy of NIVEA,” he joked. “The cut is fresh. That’s what matters.” He also highlighted the role NIVEA Derma Control played in his race-day preparation. “What I did is before the race, I made sure I was the best-smelling guy here and the most protected guy. So I used my NIVEA Derma Control.”

His comments captured exactly what the NIVEA x HYROX partnership aims to promote: confidence, preparation and performance working hand in hand.

Three Weeks to Prepare

One athlete who embraced the challenge head-on was Tebogo Mahange, NIVEA Derma Control influencer, who revealed he had only been training for HYROX for three weeks.

“So crazy. Hard, difficult, challenging, but so fun. I had a good time,” he said after crossing the finish line. Mahange was aiming to complete the race in 1 hour and 35 minutes and ultimately finished in 1 and 40 minutes.

“Considering I only trained for three weeks, I’m not too mad at it.” Following the race, he spent time at the NIVEA activation area focusing on recovery and self-care. “I’ve been out here with the family at NIVEA, doing some self-care. It’s been good, it’s been a vibe. I’m still recovering from the race, so I’m still going to stick around here.”

His experience highlighted how recovery has become an important part of the HYROX journey, particularly for athletes balancing demanding training schedules with everyday life.

Finishing Despite the Odds

For Sabelosenkosi Mathonsi, NIVEA Derma Control influencer HYROX presented a very different challenge. Competing in his first event while managing an injury, simply making it to the finish line was an achievement in itself.

“I’m not going to lie, it was horrible,” he laughed after the race. “Considering that I’m a person that trains for aesthetics, I said, ‘You know what? Let’s push ourselves. We have three weeks to train for this thing. Let’s see how far we can take it.'”

Mathonsi revealed that an injury complicated his preparation. “I was literally strapping myself in the Uber trying to get this thing healed up.” Despite the setback and mid-race cramps, he persevered to complete the event. “What actually bothered me during the race was my cramp.” Afterwards, the NIVEA Recovery Station offered a welcome opportunity to recover and reset.

“Get all freshened up and stuff, you know, and get pampered a little bit.” His story served as a reminder that HYROX is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one.

More Than Just Race Day

As HYROX continues to grow in South Africa, the event is becoming about more than crossing the finish line. Athletes are increasingly recognising the importance of preparation, recovery and self-care as part of the performance equation.

With its Derma Control range and interactive activation, NIVEA brought that message to life throughout the weekend. Whether participants were chasing personal bests, tackling their first HYROX event or simply supporting friends and family, the NIVEA Recovery Station offered a place to reset, recharge and prepare for what came next. Because when performance demands more, care matters too.
