Cyclists riding on busy roads know that awareness and visibility can make all the difference. Now, Garmin has introduced its most advanced cycling radar tail light yet. It is designed to help riders better track vehicles approaching from behind.
The new Garmin Varia RearVue 820 combines powerful radar technology, improved battery life and an upgraded tail light. These features help cyclists ride with greater confidence. Whether commuting through traffic or training on open roads, the device aims to make riders more aware of their surroundings. Furthermore, it improves how visible they are to motorists.
Advanced Vehicle Tracking Technology
One of the standout features of the Varia RearVue 820 is its new advanced vehicle tracking system. When paired with compatible Garmin cycling computers or the Varia smartphone app, cyclists receive visual and audible alerts. These alerts happen when vehicles approach from behind.
The radar technology can detect not only the presence of a vehicle but also its size, movement and potential threat level. As a vehicle gets closer, the system categorises the risk based on its speed. It also uses the vehicle’s path of travel to determine risk.
Riders can also see whether the approaching vehicle is small, medium or large directly on compatible devices such as the Garmin Edge cycling computer. Additionally, this information can be accessed within the Varia mobile app.
According to Garmin, the feature can help cyclists better anticipate how traffic around them might behave.
Detect Vehicles From up to 175 Metres Away
The radar system can detect vehicles from more than 175 metres away, giving cyclists earlier warnings about approaching traffic.

The device also features a wider field of view, allowing it to monitor vehicles moving several lanes away. This broader detection range helps riders stay informed even when traffic is changing lanes or approaching at higher speeds.
Another feature called same speed tracking alerts cyclists when vehicles remain directly behind them at a similar speed. For instance, this happens when a car is waiting for a safe moment to overtake.
For cyclists using compatible Garmin smartwatches, alerts can be delivered through vibrations on the wrist. Select watches in the Garmin Public Beta programme can also provide voice alerts when a vehicle approaches.
Improved Visibility for Day and Night Riding
Visibility is another key focus of the Varia RearVue 820. The integrated tail light is designed to help cyclists stand out in traffic. Furthermore, it can be seen from up to approximately 350 metres away.
This added visibility helps alert motorists to a cyclist’s presence earlier, particularly in low light conditions. It is also effective during early morning and evening rides.
Compact Design With Longer Battery Life
Garmin has also refined the design of the device. The Varia RearVue 820 features a sleek and compact look that integrates neatly with most road or gravel bikes.
Charging is handled via a USB C port. The device includes a new seat post mount that fits securely onto a wide range of bikes.
Battery life is another highlight. With up to 16 hours of use on a single charge, cyclists can rely on the radar for longer training rides. Alternatively, it supports daily commutes.
Price and Availability

The Garmin Varia RearVue 820 is available now with a suggested retail price of R5,999.99.
For cyclists looking to improve road awareness and visibility, the new radar tail light offers a technology driven solution. It is designed to make riding on busy roads safer and more predictable.
