The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series Turns 10—and You’re Invited

by | May 8, 2025 | Life

Celebrating A Decade of Community and Movement, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series returns to Cape Town on 11 May 2025. But this isn’t just another 10K. It’s a high-energy, people-first movement that’s reshaping what it means to run a race—and what it means to be part of something bigger.

To mark the 10-year milestone, Absa is giving all customers and Rewards members 30% cash back on their entry when they pay with an Absa card. More than a discount, this offer reflects Absa’s deeper commitment to health, wellbeing, and purpose-driven community building.

More Than a Race. It’s a Movement.

“We are thrilled to announce the return of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series for the third year running,” says Jabulile Nsibanyoni, Head of Sponsorships at Absa. “The overwhelming support from participants and partners shows just how powerful it is to promote active lifestyles while making real impact—and as a result, this year’s Cape Town race is already sold out.”

And it’s no wonder. Whether you’re running, jogging, walking, or cheering from the sidelines, this race is personal. As part of Absa’s brand promise, “Your Story Matters,” the series encourages all South Africans to step up, move forward, and be seen.

“It’s not about being elite—it’s about being in,” says Nsibanyoni. “You don’t have to run a marathon to call yourself a runner. These races are inclusive, vibrant and social—and they invite everyone to reconnect with their cities, with each other, and with themselves.”

Your Kilometres Can Create Change

Through Team Absa Walk/Run, the brand is making a stronger commitment to social upliftment. For every kilometre logged by Team Absa members on Strava in 2025, Absa will donate R1 toward community projects.

Last year, the series raised R1.5 million, which funded sustainable food gardens in primary schools across five provinces in partnership with Urban Harvest. These gardens are more than food security—they’re outdoor classrooms teaching kids about healthy living and environmental care.

Why This Partnership Matters

Nsibanyoni believes events like this offer something few others can: “Running empowers people. It’s accessible. It’s a form of self-care and a way to build confidence. You don’t need fancy gear—just a pair of shoes and a goal. You don’t even have to run the full 10K to feel the impact.”

For her, the event’s significance is deeply personal: “A colleague of mine had never run before. She trained, took part in her first-ever 12K, and crossed the finish line beaming. That pride, that transformation—that’s the power of this series. Every finisher is proof of what’s possible.”

That’s also why Absa is shifting its sponsorship approach—from passive spectatorship to active participation. “We want to meet people where they are. We’re not just here for financial wellness. We’re here for your personal journey, too.”
