This Mental Health Awareness Month, Sandton City has unveiled the next chapter of its Words That Heal campaign in collaboration with the Riky Rick Foundation. What started as a national call for South Africans to share words of encouragement has evolved into a moving song of hope. It is also an immersive in-centre experience that celebrates the power of creative expression in supporting youth mental wellness.
The Song That Speaks to Healing
Earlier this year, South Africans were invited to send voice notes of encouragement to people who might be struggling. From hundreds of heartfelt submissions, a selection of these messages has been woven into a powerful hip hop track. This track, also titled Words That Heal, features the voice of Riky Rick himself.

The song is a celebration of resilience and unity, reminding listeners that no one walks their journey alone. Available from today across social media, streaming platforms, and YouTube, the track carries the campaign’s message. It emphasises that words have the power to connect, comfort and inspire. It is a reminder that awareness means little without action. Additionally, we all have a role to play in supporting mental health.
Experience the Movement at Sandton City
Until Sunday, 9 November, Sandton City shoppers can visit the Words That Heal experiential pop-up space on the upper level next to BOSS. Created in collaboration with artist Samurai Farai, the installation features limited-edition T-shirts, hoodies and scarves. These are inspired by “artivism” — the intersection of art and activism that Riky Rick embodied.

All proceeds from merchandise sales will go to the Riky Rick Foundation, which supports youth mental wellness. Additionally, the foundation creates opportunities for young people to use creativity as a form of healing. Those unable to visit in person can still contribute by pledging online at rikyrickfoundation.co.za/pledges.
Raising Voices, Saving Lives
Every day, South Africa loses an estimated 23 people to suicide, while hundreds more attempt to take their own lives. Initiatives like Words That Heal aim to shift the conversation. They make it easier to talk about mental health and to reach out for help when it is needed most.
The WhatsApp line (063 980 5816) remains open for anyone who wants to send a message of hope or encouragement. Because sometimes, one kind message can make all the difference.
