Nelson Mandela Square Launches a Luxury Festive Experience

by | Entertainment, Partnership

If your idea of Christmas shopping includes champagne, curated gifting and a little festive indulgence, Nelson Mandela Square is setting the bar high this season. From 12 to 22 December, the iconic Sandton destination will host Celebrations on the Square. This is a boutique Christmas experience designed for those who prefer their festive cheer with a side of sophistication.

Running daily from 4pm to 9pm, the experience invites visitors into a custom-built glass marquee. Here, shopping, sipping and seasonal spoils come together in a refined, unhurried setting. Entry costs R75 and includes a glass of Laurent-Perrier champagne and a generous charcuterie board. It is as much about lingering as it is about browsing. Attendance is limited to 200 guests per day, keeping the experience intimate and exclusive.

A Festive Escape in the Heart of Sandton

Guests enter through a striking archway framed by luxury lifestyle nutcrackers. This opens into a beautifully styled space complete with a statement ceiling installation and elegant festive décor. Comfortable lounge areas and cocktail tables are scattered throughout. These encourage visitors to slow down, enjoy a drink and take in the atmosphere beneath Nelson Mandela Square’s signature twinkling lights.

Adding to the ambience, a live violinist performs daily from 6pm to 8pm, giving each evening a relaxed, celebratory soundtrack.

Thoughtful Gifting and Boutique Finds

Inside the marquee, a carefully curated mix of local and international vendors offers elevated gifting options and artisanal treats. Babylonstoren brings a taste of the Franschhoek Valley to Sandton. They offer farm produce, curated hampers and lifestyle goods from its historic Cape Dutch farm.

Festive florals and Christmas wreaths are available from Veldmeisie, while Oooh La La supplies handcrafted confectionery. Shoppers can also browse bespoke glass décor from Casa LV and imported Italian pieces from Le Perline. Ceramics by Storm Ceramics and hand-poured candles from Chapters Home Fragrance are also available.

Food lovers are well catered for, with Lemoni Food Studio offering festive favourites. A traditional panettone merchant is on site and Matcha Pod keeps the tea flowing. Gelato Mania delivers icy indulgence, while Kaldista Coffee Company ensures quality coffee throughout the experience.

Champagne, Cookbooks and Finishing Touches

Laurent-Perrier anchors the champagne lounge, offering tastings, bottles to purchase and personalised luggage tags with selected buys. These thoughtful extras make for memorable keepsakes and premium gifts. A curated selection of local cookbooks from tastemakers such as Naqiyah Mayat and Angie Durrant simplifies gifting for food-focused friends and family.

Christmas décor and ornaments can be found at the Grandiflora Christmas shop. Meanwhile, Wrap It provides boutique gift packaging designed to elevate the unwrapping experience.

Charis Claasen, Asset Manager of Nelson Mandela Square, says the experience was created to encourage guests to slow down and savour the season. “Celebrations on the Square has been crafted to feel intimate, polished and adorned with seasonal flair. We wanted to create a festive space where people can sip something special and enjoy the beauty of the Square at this time of year.”

With recent additions like Gelato Mania and the Standard Bank Art Lab gallery, Nelson Mandela Square continues to evolve. It remains one of Johannesburg’s most dynamic lifestyle destinations.
