This juicy steak sandwich is piled high with melted cheese, caramelised red onions, mustard and rocket for the ultimate sandwich. We’ve seasoned with balsamic vinegar, honey and Dijon mustard for a little kick.
To take your sandwich to the next level, try using blue cheese instead of cheddar, or watercress instead of rocket for a similarly peppery flavour.

Steak Sandwich
Ingredients
- 4 Tbsp. olive oil
- 2 red onions halved and thinly sliced
- 2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar
- 2 tsp. honey
- 2 sirloin steaks about 200g each
- 75 g mature cheddar cheese coarsely grated
- 2 Tbsp. dijon mustard
- 40 g rocket
- 4 half ciabattas each halved lengthways
Instructions
- STEP 1Remove the steaks from the fridge so they can come to room temperature.
- STEP 2To make the caramelised onion, heat 1tbsp oil in a small frying pan over medium heat and add the onion. Season with salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and lightly golden, 6-8 minutes. Add the balsamic vinegar and honey and cook, stirring, until mostly evaporated and sticky, 1-2 minutes. Transfer to a bowl to cool slightly.
- STEP 3Preheat your grill to high. Lay the halved ciabattas out on a roasting tray (cut side up) and drizzle with 2tbsp of the olive oil. Grill the ciabattas until lightly golden, 1-2 minutes.
- STEP 4Drizzle the remaining 1tbsp olive oil over the steaks and season with salt and pepper. Heat a frying pan or griddle pan over high heat until really hot then cook the steaks for 3-4 minutes each side for medium rare.
- STEP 5Transfer to a baking tray, top with the grated cheese and pop under the grill until the cheese is melted and bubbling, about 1 minute. Transfer to a chopping board and leave to rest for 2 minutes before slicing. Spread the mustard over one half of each ciabatta then divide the steak slices between them. Top this with the caramelised onion then the rocket before topping with the remaining ciabatta half.
