I first realised the tank top’s true it factor when Dwyane Wade wore one tucked into high-waist pants at Milan Fashion Week. The former NBA player styled it with sleek dress sneakers and a pearl necklace, and it was one of the most unique menswear approaches I had ever seen. For a lot of guys, a tank is either the sloppy undershirt they forget to take off or a ratty gym uniform for curling in front of the mirror. But as someone who lives and breathes fashion, I’ve experimented with tanks in my own wardrobe and found they can be worn multiple ways (even for the office or dinner) if styled correctly.

And here’s why I keep coming back to them: tanks offer great breathability during the hotter months, they show off your bicep gains, and feel more relaxed than a T-shirt. Sure, you can wear one around the house or at the beach, but a tank has too much character to be treated like loungewear. With spring now in South Africa, it’s the perfect time to bring this style staple into your rotation. Ahead, I break down some tips on how to make one look cool for the season and beyond.

Start with the Right Fit
The number-one mistake guys make with tank tops is going either way too tight or way too loose. A good tank should skim your body without clinging like compression gear, and it shouldn’t billow like a cut-up tee. Look for tanks with wider shoulder straps (not spaghetti straps) and make sure the armholes don’t dip too far. The fit should frame your torso, not expose your ribs.
Style tip: Pair a well-fitting tank with relaxed shorts or lightweight trousers. You’ll look put-together while still staying cool and comfortable.

Look for Upgraded Fabrics
Cheap cotton tanks loose their shape after a few washes and end up looking like undershirts. Instead, look for tanks in ribbed cotton, linen blends, or textured fabrics that can hold their structure and look sharp enough to wear solo. Many local retailers like Woolworths, Zara, Bash, H&M South Africa, and Cotton On now stock upgraded tanks that work as proper style pieces rather than just underlayers.

Wear It Solo
Some tanks are nice enough to fly solo. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worn one with just shorts and sneakers, or trousers and dress shoes. It depends on the design and quality of the tank. A high-neck and knit tank is more fashion-forward and appropriate for semi-dressy events, while a low-cut and cropped style works for music festivals or chill settings that don’t require too much. The trick is picking the right tank and pairing it with the right bottoms. Because you’re wearing it on its own, you’ll want slightly dressier chinos or trousers to keep the outfit polished.
Think About Layers
In addition to wearing a tank on its own, you can also make it work as a base layer. The options in layering a tank are endless. You just have to treat it like a real piece of clothing, not a leftover undershirt.

Suit
When layering it with a suit, keep it sleek and minimal. A fitted ribbed or knit tank looks sharp under a lightweight suit in linen, cotton, or tropical wool. I like to finish it off with loafers or even clean leather sneakers like Common Projects.
Overshirt
For an overshirt combo, I’ll throw on a cotton or ribbed tank underneath. Pair it with slim chinos or relaxed denim with boots or clean sneakers. Make sure the tank is slim fit, so that it keeps everything neat instead of bunching.

Camp Collar Shirt
With camp shirts, the neckline of the tank should be lower than the bottom of the collar to create a clean line. Wearing the shirt open over a tank is a foolproof vacation move I’ve used more than once, and it made my fit look more polished. For bottoms, lightweight trousers or tailored pants shorts keep it breezy, but clean, and finish with sandals or low-profile sneakers.

Know Where to Wear It
Tank tops can go beyond the gym, beach, or backyard braais. Try a knit tank under a blazer for office casual Fridays, or a ribbed tank with trousers and loafers for dinners. The key is fabric and pairing: the sharper the tank, the sharper the bottoms.

Bottoms
If you’re in a ribbed tank, keep it relaxed with loose denim, cargos, or athletic shorts. The slim top pairs best with a roomier bottom. For a knit tank, go sharper: pleated trousers, linen pants, or slim chinos to help elevate the look and make it dinner-appropriate. And with a muscle tank, joggers or tailored athletic shorts lean into the sporty vibe without looking sloppy. The formula is simple: the more elevated the tank, the sharper the pants; the more casual the tank, the looser and more laid-back the bottoms.

Footwear
Sneakers are the easiest way to anchor your tank look. Chunky sneakers (think Nike Air Force 1s, Adidas Originals, or New Balance 530s) play well with ribbed tanks. Minimal leather sneakers or loafers suit a knitted tank. Sporty retro runners like Asics GEL-NYC or Puma Mostro pair perfectly with muscle tanks.

Accessories
Accessories are what make a tank feel like style. With a ribbed tank, a silver chain, baseball cap, or crossbody bag adds streetwear credibility. With a knit tank, a slim belt, watch, or understated ring makes the outfit read more “polished casual” (great for dinners or dates). And with a muscle tank, sunglasses or even a sporty watch keeps the look cohesive. The point isn’t to pile on, but to pick one or two pieces that add character.
