Marc Newson Returns to G-Star with a Timeless Vision

Two decades after teaming up with G-Star for one of fashion’s most forward-thinking collaborations, Marc Newson is back. The world-renowned industrial designer, celebrated for his futuristic forms and uncompromising material work, has reunited with the denim brand to reissue 22 of his most iconic pieces. The capsule, originally created between 2004 and 2016, arrives again with striking relevance in 2025. For Men’s Health, Newson spoke about the revival, his design philosophy and why timelessness might be fashion’s most radical idea.

A Collaboration That Still Feels Urgent

After years of global demand and growing interest in the original pieces, Newson says the timing aligned naturally. “It is a collaboration that is deeply gratifying,” he explains. “This collection somehow feels more relevant now than ever before. It is really a matter of timing, the meeting of popular demand and the contemporary resonance of the collection. The urgency, its relevance, remains.”

The revival does not rely on nostalgia. Instead, it reintroduces work built with the kind of precision and clarity that holds its shape across eras.

What Makes a Design Timeless

Since the beginning of his career, Newson has aimed to create objects and garments that do not age out of relevance. “In all my work I aspire to create something timeless,” he says. “Design which stands the test of time, rather than work which is time specific or dependent.”

He believes timelessness is created through quality and honesty in materials. “Timelessness is a nonspecific concept, so it is difficult to pinpoint,” he adds. “Yet quality reveals itself first in the materials.” In other words, his pieces endure because they were designed to.

Newson’s background in industrial design continues to shape his approach to apparel. “The principles which underscore Industrial Design and Fashion are subject to wholly differing parameters,” he says. “It is those boundaries, that specificity, that drives the work forward.” Both fields, however, share a foundation of rigour. “One can recognise both as formal manifestations. They are realisations born of processes, material complexity and functional consideration.”That mindset is visible in this capsule. These are garments engineered as much as they are styled.

Bringing Fluidity to Denim

Newson is known for fluid, biomorphic shapes and translating those curves into denim required innovation. “Fluid shape, or the impression of fluidity, can be achieved through structure, material and composition,” he says. “This translation process requires the correct engagement, born of balance and precision.” The result is expressive yet wearable silhouettes that feel crafted, not simply cut. The capsule places integrity at its centre. Newson’s commitment to form meeting function guides every decision.

“I remain committed to communicating an honest synthesis between form and function,” he says. “I am compelled to incorporate functional elements openly, with the intention of practical use, as opposed to elements which are merely gestural, peripheral additions.” This gives the pieces a clarity that many trend-driven garments lack.

A Worldwide Language of Workwear

While Japanese workwear influenced the original collections, the new reissue draws from a broader global palette. “Yes, Japanese workwear is certainly a key area of inspiration,” Newson says. “But not the only source. The collection draws on multiple, diverse areas of interest, with workwear in a more general sense acting as the expansive platform.” The aim, he explains, is universal functionality. “This collection can be said to represent the possibilities of workwear anywhere. It speaks to functionality more broadly, rather than one informed by specific cultural or geographical boundaries.”

Asked which piece embodies the entire capsule, Newson points to the MN New Icon Oversized T-Shirt. “I think it is representative of the philosophy of the collection as a whole. It outlines the essentials.”

“Innovation is not always about newness,” Newson says. “For me, timelessness is a form of innovation. The value is communicated through a truth to materials, utility, formal coherence and clarity of vision.” It is a refreshing shift in an industry often obsessed with reinvention.

Looking Ahead

Newson remains driven by curiosity and challenge. “I continue to be driven by projects which present exciting new challenges,” he says. “I am drawn to work which presents opportunities to learn, develop skills and forge new connections.”

The revived G-Star x Marc Newson capsule are proof that powerful design does not age. Instead, it grows into new contexts and finds new audiences.
